History

The Character Lab is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit created in 2013 to advance the science and practice of character development.

The idea of bringing scientists and educators together began when Angela Duckworth, now our Scientific Director, began working with Dave Levin and Dominic Randolph, founding members of our Board of Directors. Dave brought the perspective of co-founding the KIPP schools, while Dominic had spent his career in independent schools, most recently at the Riverdale Country School where he serves as Head of School.

Under the capable leadership of Brittany Butler and a committed team of educators and designers, Character Lab made promising strides toward the creation of tools and measures for schools. In parallel, we made grants to several rising star researchers.

To more fully realize our interdisciplinary vision, the Character Lab made the decision to move its physical headquarters from an office building in New York City to the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Coincident with that move, Angela assumed her current leadership role and Donald Kamentz, a two-decade education veteran who most recently had been with the YES Prep public charter school system in Houston, became our Executive Director.

We could not be more optimistic about the future. Our early successes augur our long-term vision: all children develop to their fullest potential.
